Diagnostic musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, and soft tissues. What Happens During the Examination?
Preparation:
No special preparation is required. You may be asked to expose the area being examined.
Procedure:
A small amount of gel is applied to the skin, and a handheld device called a transducer moves over the area. The sound waves create real-time images on a screen.
Movement Assessment:
You may be asked to move the affected joint or muscle to assess its function dynamically.
A typical MSK ultrasound scan lasts 30 minutes, depending on the area being examined and the complexity of the condition.
